Summary
Karen Rosenberg wrote about the stratagies she developed on how to get through the oh-so-enjoyable assigned reading in college english classes. These stratagies included considering everything about the author, the intended audience and how to get the most out of the reading by paying close attention to the text.
My Thoughts
I really liked this reading, and ironically, since it is about assigned reading- I didn't think it was too hard to get through. She started out by emphasizing the fact that she, like us, hates assigned reading and struggles sometimes to stay awake while reading let alone understanding the text completely. I never really thought about some of the points she made, such as getting through "the abstract". I didn't even know that existed...but it explains why sometimes the hardest part of assigned reading is getting through the first few paragraphs. That's where all the big words hangout. I also never really read through "the goals" in my textbooks. They were always just something that I skimmed over. I also never really thought about academic journals lacking a hook- I guess if you're reading an academic journal, chances are you're doing it by choice, or you're doing it because you have a quiz on it- and your hook is recieving an A on said quiz.
